Bisi bele bath

About the recipe:

Bisi bele bath is a rice-based dish fromĀ Karnataka, India. Its a wholesome meal packed with protein and goodness of vegetables.

Ingredients:

  • Mustad seeds – 1 spoon
  • Cumin seeds – 2 spoons
  • Urad dal – 4 spoon
  • Chana dal – 3 spoons
  • Dry red chillies -5
  • Coriander seeds – 2 spoons
  • Green Chilli – 2
  • Onion (shallots)- 4
  • Tomato – 1
  • Vegetables – 2 cups
  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Toor dal – 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder -1/2 spoon
  • Tamarind – small lemon size
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil

NB:

  • SoakĀ the rice and in water for 45 mins
  • Vegetables like Beans, carrot, brinjal, drumstick, ladysfinger, green peas can be used.
  • Soak the tamarind in hot water and extract the juice.

Method:

  • Dry roast dry red chillies, 3 spoons of chana dal, a spoon of cumin seeds, 3 spoons of urad dal, coriander seeds, a spoon of cumin seeds and grind them into a corse powder.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustad seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, asafoetida, curry leaves and saute. Then add onion, tomato and vegetables and saute well. Add salt and turmeric powder.
  • Now add the soaked rice and pressure cooked toor dal along with the 3 parts of water and cook it covered for 30 minutes in medium flame. Stir occasionally. The rice dal and vegetables should cook to a mashy consistency. Add little extra water if required.
  • Now add tamrind juice and the powder we prepared earlier and cook it for 5 more mins. Switch off the flame and serve hot with a splash of ghee.
